The chamber score

The Rite of Spring

Igor Stravinsky · Paris, 1913

The inside-out museum was born in the city that rioted for this ballet.

An original chamber arrangement in the climate of the work. The recording is not a copy. It is the room answering.

You already feel this

You are tired of rooms that hide how they work. The ducts, the labour, the code. Pompidou hung the guts on the facade and let a city walk through. If you have ever wanted the machinery named, this is your museum.

The original

Opened in 1977 after a scandalised competition. Piano and Rogers put structure, stairs and services on the exterior in coded colours. It became the most visited modern art museum in Europe, and a public square with a building attached.

The rebuild · The exposed machine

We rebuilt it as an organism of ducts and light, a culture machine that refuses to pretend it is a palace. Tech here is honesty about infrastructure.

01

Colour as a legend

Blue for air, green for water, yellow for electrics, red for movement. The rebuild keeps the legend. Most buildings gaslight you about their own bodies. This one published the diagram.

02

The square did the work

The plaza in front mattered as much as the galleries. Tech that does not make a public room is only a product. The escalator tube is a civic gesture.

03

Still rude

It shocked Paris. It still looks like it arrived last night. That is a virtue. The rebuild does not sand it down. Rude machines keep a city awake.

Shift the feeling

What if Centre Pompidou was rebuilt as something else?
