It already knows your name.
The original
Work began in 1882. Gaudí took the project in 1883 and treated it as a theology of stone — a forest of columns, a geometry of light. He was struck by a tram in 1926 and died before the towers were a fraction of his drawing. Civil war, fire, missing models, a city that grew around the crane. Completion has been promised to the next decade for as long as anyone living can remember.
The rebuild · A prayer that never ends
We rebuilt the basilica as an organism that grows and then stops, mid-gesture. The scaffolding is no longer iron. It is light that will not come down. Frustration, here, is not failure. It is a habitat.

The scaffolding never left
In the rebuild, the cranes are gone and the interruption remains. Towers bloom like coral and halt in the air, as if the stone itself lost the will to finish the sentence. You walk beneath them and feel the particular ache of a life lived in draft. The building does not apologize. It has made a home of almost.

He died in the street
Gaudí was not a myth when the tram hit him. He was an old man in worn clothes, mistaken for a beggar. The greatest work of his life was still a construction site. If you have ever feared that the thing you are making will outlive you in its ugliest state — the half-done, the unshared — you are standing in his nave.

Almost is a place
Tourists photograph the unfinished as if it were complete, because beauty arrived before the ending did. That is the trap, and the mercy. You can be magnificent in progress and still be tired of progress. The rebuild does not close the cathedral. It lets you admit you live here.
