The chamber score
Enta Omri
Umm Kulthum / Mohammed Abdel Wahab · Cairo, 1964
The tallest thing on earth still has to answer to the century's great Arabic voice.
An original chamber arrangement in the climate of the work. The recording is not a copy. It is the room answering.
You already feel this
You hit the number. The title. The city. The version of success you were promised would quiet the room. The room did not quiet. Desire that has no 'enough' will always find another floor. If you have ever arrived and felt nothing, this tower is already growing out of you.
The original
Opened in 2010 at 828 metres — the tallest building on earth. A needle of glass and steel in a city that rose from desert in a single generation. It was designed to be unsurpassable, which is a wish, not a fact. Height records exist to be broken. The hunger that funds them does not.
The rebuild · Hunger given a vertical body
We rebuilt the tower as a climb that refuses to end. It punches through cloud and still looks unfinished at the tip, as if the building itself were still reaching. Desire here is ambition that cannot land.
01
Tallest is a temporary word
The rebuild does not celebrate the record. It shows the panic inside the record: a spire that keeps going because stopping would mean feeling the ground. Cities like this one were not made by people who were satisfied. Neither were most lives that look, from a distance, like winning.
02
The city already below
From the upper floors, the lights become a lattice you can no longer name. That is what enough looks like when it arrives too late: the thing you wanted, made small by the wanting. If your family, your work, your own body has been treated as a base camp for the next ascent, you know this view.
03
A different height
There is a floor where the climb could have been a home. The rebuild leaves it unmarked. You have to choose it. Desire will not. Desire only knows up.
